The Alberta WebSMR provides healthcare institutions with a simple standardized electronic means of capturing surgical medical records.
The Alberta WebSMR provides a vehicle to facilitate the adoption of information system and will help to advance the implementation of an integrated electronic medical record in Alberta.
Surgeons can access the following templates on line: Breast, Colon, Gallbladder/Bile Duct, Gastric, Liver, Melanoma, Ovarian, Periampullary/Pancreas, Rectal, Sarcoma, and Thyroid.
Empowering Surgeons
Alberta WebSMR provides healthcare institutions with a simple standardized electronic means of capturing surgical medicals records. Its simple interactive questionnaire design makes it easy for surgeons to to file consistent reports from anywhere at anytime and is an example of an active electronic patient record component for an electronic health record.
Developed almost entirely by the previous Alberta Cancer Board and health region clinicians, the Alberta WebSMR provides a vehicle to facilitate the adoption of information system technology and will help to advance the implementation of an integrated electronic medical record in Alberta. A surgical report can be printed based on the Alberta WebSMR at any time, and it replaces the need for a surgeon to create standard reports through dictation or other measures.
The Alberta WebSMR is also an important educational tool for surgeons across the province because it provides surgeons with a data set to improve techniques or to identify areas in which continuing education and training may be required, improving overall cancer surgery patient care.
Implementation of the Alberta WebSMR across the health regions is a key initiative of Alberta Health Services as part of its multi-year performance agreement with Alberta Health and Wellness.
Alberta WebSMR implementation is well underway and the program will continue to roll out province wide with several tumor groups on board including hepatobiliary, rectal, breast, sarcoma, melanoma, ovarian, endocrine, colon, and periampullary.
System Enhancements
The Alberta WebSMR is ever-evolving, with updates to keep the system fresh and user-friendly. Some of our recent
enhancements include:
A number of enhancements are currently being tested by CSA staff e.g. aesthetics, readability and format of the WebSMR
report. These enhancements include:
- Manipulation of the default title & type of report, i.e. Operative report, Surgeon's name, Date of Surgery. CSA's control for development over these sections will allow creation of templates for discharge summaries, follow up and for areas outside of surgery such as Medical Oncology and Radiology.
- Customization of heading format and placement:
- Manipulation of headings to decide which ones should appear in report and where
- Manipulation of fonts to apply to heading to indicate hierarchy i.e.
PAGE HEADING
Section Heading
Question Set Heading
- A summary section will appear at the beginning of the template with the option to choose which questions will appear in this section i.e. Date of Surgery, Procedure, Preop Diagnosis, etc. The option to keep these questions in the body of the report is available.
- Unnecessary headings will no longer display on report
- Comments will appear across the entire page, they currently are limited to one side and appear in a strip.
- Questions can be wrapped so longer questions don't expand across the page
- Testing has just been completed and approved; CSA staff will work with the Tumour Groups to apply the customization to the reports.
Definitions and tool tips:
Definitions of available responses will be viewable with a tooltip application in the WebSMR. Additionally, terms within the questions can be defined using the same tooltip application. The tooltip works by resting the cursor over the highlighted term.
Terms are currently defined using controlled standard medical vocabularies and consensus from Alberta surgeons.
The AHS Safe Surgery Checklist will be integrated in all WebSMR templates ensuring safety standards are met.
